Deception A Novel Denise Mina Books

Lachlan's wife, Susie, has been imprisoned for the murder of one of her former patients at the prison she worked at as a psychologist. He has been murdered in a manner similar to his alleged victims, and his wife is missing, presumed dead.

Lachlan is convinced that his wife is innocent and begins digging into her files and papers in hopes of discovering something that will help her case on appeal. He uncovers far more than he bargained for, and we slowly see a much different character to Susie and a gradual unfolding of both her story and that of the alleged murderer/rapist, Andrew Gow. The prosecution has claimed that she was obsessed with Gow and had an affair with him, which Lachlan begins to wonder about as his probes into his wife's life. The story is full of some gruesome twists and turns as the story progresses.

I had trouble getting into this one, perhaps because it is told from Lachlan's perspective, and the farther I got into the book, the more I disliked him. I much prefer the two books I have read in the two Garnethill and Paddy Meehan series.

Deception A Novel Denise Mina Books Reviews

This is a "crime" mystery written as a diary by a husband whose wife has been convicted of a murder. The story seems unfathonable and the reader become engrossed in trying to figure what is going on. Mina is a good writer and bring the tale to a close that ties up all the loose ends very nicely. Slightly tongue in cheek, I think -- but fun to read.
but well-written. The main character is drawn with believable flaws, and the inexorable flow of events towards the climax makes the book hard to put down.
I am still not completely sure whodunit but I enjoyed every page of it. Throughout, I couldn't stand the narrator, now I want to read again, knowing the thoroughly twisted ending. I look forward to re-reading more Denise Mina..
I recently read a more recent crime/mystery, The End of Wasp Season, by Denise Mina. That prompted me to review her other books. I remembered that Deception would probably make my top ten list of favorite books. Therefore I read it again! A crime novel has to be really good to engage me a second time. ( all be it 7 years later.) I would describe this as a psychological/intellectual mystery.
The End of Wasp Season was also very good 4 stars!
When a loyal husband and father searches through his wife's personal computer files and papers, he is trying to find evidence of her innocence in the case against her. A case that has resulted in her conviction for the murder of her alleged serial-killer patient and his wife.

So what is the story of Dr. Susie Harriot, and will Lachlan Harriot find what he needs for her appeal?

Sorting through the morass of these files, however, will lead Lachlan to unexpected secrets, twisted truths, and will finally convince him that he did not know his wife at all.

Throughout this story, I found that the best part was not knowing who to believe and untangling the many-faceted aspects of the case.

An intense psychological thriller, Deception A Novel kept me tuned in until the surprising end, which is why I gave it five stars.
I enjoy Denise Mina's writing and I enjoyed reading this book. The protagonist, a relatively young man worried about his appearance, his weight and hair, his lack of self-confidence, etc. gave me an appealing misfit. Having been written as a diary, I always expected that there might be ulterior motives. Of course the murder mystery in itself kept my interest. The plot is a bit convoluted but I suppose plausible. However, there is in my view one glaring error. If someone commits murder in order to prove a convicted serial killer innocent, then that person would not leave incriminating evidence against that same killer.

Nevertheless, I will now plan to read the second and third installments of her trilogy "Garnet Hill." These received a better reception from readers than "Deception," but I would still recommend it.
This is my all-time favorite book. Ever. I have read it three times in the past 10 years. I haven't particularly liked any of Denise Mina's other books, but this one is stellar. The audio performance is also great. I like this book because it is character driven. The more you read, the more you find out about the characters and their many, many flaws. It also has a mystery and some unforeseen twists and turns.
