I loved, loved, loved this book until the ending. I didn't get it. At all. But up until then, it had me hook, line and sinker (so to speak). Storyline was creepy, writing was fantastic. But the damn ending... Couldn't decide what exactly was supposed to have happened on the ship and that was frustrating to me as a reader (especially one who was so invested in the characters' fates).Tags : Day Four - Kindle edition by Sarah Lotz. Day Four edition by Sarah Lotz Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I reallly liked this book especially the way she tied everything up. This book is not for everyone but I love a weird story. I feel like the very last chapter should have been left out because it just takes away from the book but that being said I would still recommend the book.
I have to agree with most of the one-star and two-star people like myself; it lacks suspense, plods along endlessly, has generally poor character development, and is fragmented to an annoying degree. Even the supernatural element of the story line has no conviction to interest the reader. The premise for this book seemed to hold such promise; however, the author failed to deliver, giving this reader little if any hope of reading any future works by this writer.
Let me just say that I will never go on a cruise. Never Ever. I enjoyed this follow up book to The Three as much as the first one. It still surprises me all the negative reviews of both of these novels.
Also, If you haven't read The Three don't let it stop you from reading this. I lent it to a friend that was unfamiliar with the first book and they still enjoyed it and agreed the that their cruise days were over.
Highly recommended.
Just like "The Three," Day Four left a lot of questions unanswered, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book. Watching the different reactions of passengers and crew as the ship descended into total chaos was fascinating, and almost more a study in human nature than a supernatural story. The supernatural element added a level of creepiness and mystery that kept the book moving forward. And it was fun to get a glimpse of what I assume were the remains of the world after the events of "The Three." If Lotz continues writing in this universe, I'll definitely continue reading.
This book is well written but the story really drags. Initially I thought this was a comedy. After a character's dialogue the author adds their personal thoughts, which is totally opposite or cynical compared to what was just said. Almost every page I had to stop reading and have a good laugh. As to the story, other than a few suspenseful moments, the entire book is one long description of the living conditions onboard. It went from funny to boring, and then monotonous. Every character described in detail the worsening conditions. You read every possible perspective on urine and feces, which plagued the ship as it floundered. Halfway through the book I kicked it into overdrive speed reading. I knew what to expect page to page with more descriptions of life onboard. This book should have been half the length.
Day Four is an intense and chilling read. The characters are complex and for those who like suspense, this story of a cruise ship en route to the unimaginable end will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoyed The Three A Novel then Day Four is different in that it's not the fast-paced kind of thriller that will keep you awake all night, but Sara Lotz' characters are much more well-developed and intriguing. There are some subtle references from The Three but Day Four can be read on its own without having read The Three. I enjoyed the hell out of this book and if you have an open mind and and a love of roller coaster rides in reading, then you'll love it, too.
**POSSIBLE SPOILER** Having seen criticism elsewhere about Lotz' books ending with not every thread tied up neatly into place, I will say that some of the mystery is still in your mind after reading the book. This is true of The Three and Day Four. Neither of these books will answer every question we might have and that annoyed me initially but now think it's a brilliant foreshadowing technique Lotz has made her own.
I very much enjoyed how this novel played out, shifting amongst several varying perspectives and narrative tools (some chapters were straight exposition, some were blog posts, some interviews). This was a gripping read--I became very caught up in the ever-worsening events and could not stop turning the pages. The supernatural element was understated but also very intriguing. I hadn't read Sarah Lotz's previous book, but there were references to it in this one, so I immediately picked that up afterwards (you can read this one without having read the 1st). The ending of this book was a little bit disappointing in that I felt the concepts of alternative realities and spirits that can return as other people could have been explored further....but I'm hoping those theme are expounded upon in her first book and whatever follows Day Four. I recommend this for a fast-faced, disconcerting tale that will make you happy to be wherever you are and not on a cruise ship!
I loved, loved, loved this book until the ending. I didn't get it. At all. But up until then, it had me hook, line and sinker (so to speak). Storyline was creepy, writing was fantastic.
