This is a beautiful book--stunningly layered and sensuous, simultaneously sweeping and intimate in its scope, the novel examines the ways women across culture and time find ways, large and small, to rebel against the roles and expectations that might otherwise box them in. Addie, a Christian missionary in nineteenth century China, who leaves her family to follow the woman she loves across China; Hazel, a mid-century farm widow in Illinois who falls in love with her best friend’s husband; and Juanlan, a college graduate in contemporary rural China who struggles to define her life on her own terms. Patterson brings the threads of these women’s lives together in a way that positively shimmers. I found myself touching the final pages, hoping some of their beauty might stay with me a while longer.

Rebellion A Novel Molly Patterson 9780062574046 Books Reviews

Beautifully written and very moving portrait of 4 women whose lives were portrayed with great emotional depth. I came to really care about these characters. I loved every minute of reading it, and didn't want it to end.
great
Compelling story. Intriguing characters and story line of rural America and overseas missionary work. Fascinating!
Our book club do not enjoy reading this book. Some members didn't finish the book, which is more than 500 pages. Those that did finish reading it did not encourage them to try and complete the book. The description I read of the book implies the characters were all interrelated. These relationships are tenuous at best.
Intersecting stories that go nowhere. Writing is above par, although far, far too much detail that, too, goes nowhere. Ending would be a disappointment, if I expected more. I feel obligated to finish books I buy. Because of this, I finished this one.
Beautifully written, immersive, and compelling. The novel weaves together the stories of a missionary in China and her lonely sister back home, a widowed farm wife in the 1950s, and a restless young woman returned to her small Chinese town after college. In their own ways, each of the women makes space for herself in the world, by pushing back against expectations and circumscribed roles--a perfect novel for our present day. And it's also compulsively readable. A real treasure.
With extraordinary delicacy of touch and sharpness of insight, Molly Patterson has written one of the best books of the year. Rebellion is a capacious novel, taking in numerous lives, two continents and three centuries, and delivering them to the reader with clarity, finesse, and beauty. Patterson seems incapable of writing a bad sentence, and her perceptions on her characters and their compromised life choices are focused and riveting. Her landscapes are drawn with clarity, and her characterizations are razor sharp, so clear and layered that readers might emerge from this novel convinced they know its characters first hand. It's hard to believe this is Patterson's first novel; her touch is sure and strong, and already I am looking forward to her next book. This one is stunning.
