For Lee's legion of fans, from the early Hammer films through The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, this is probably a "must read." Lee certainly has led an interesting and accomplished life, appeared in innumerable films, and worked with a host of inspriring actors. His autobiography deals with his youth and ancestry possibly in more detail than many movie fans might wish. Nevertheless, both are interesting, as are his war experiences. Although he touches on many of his films, his friends and fellow actors, reading the book, I couldn't help but wish for more detail. Perhaps this was imposssible if Lee were to keep the book in manageable proportions. Still, I would have liked more detail about Peter Cushing, Boris Karloff and others whom Lee came to know well, and more detail about some of the films. One thing to keep in mind is that Lee is, first of all, an English gentleman, so there is no "tell all" aspect to the book. It is extremely civilized, reserved and self-deprecating, and sometimes fails to give us the depth that we might wish. And, of course, there is a fair amount about golf, one of Lee's passions, but not perhaps a subject that drives fans to read the book. I will also say the treatment of the latter years is somewhat truncated. Further, most of the book previously was published in England a number of years ago as "Tall, Dark and Gruesome." I bought this book and "Tall, Dark . . " online at the same time, expecting that this would pick up where "Tall, Dark ..." left off. No such luck. "Lord of Misrule" simply reprints "Tall, Dark..." and adds a few chapters bringing the earlier book more or less up to date. This was disappointing, and I think a notice or disclaimer on the book would be in order. If you already have read "Tall, Dark..", this book only provides a few new chapters covering Lee's later career. Still, it was an enjoyable read that seemed to fly by, and most fans should appreciate it.One note, in thinking about the book as a whole, it is refreshing to read the life of an actor who often appeared in less than terrific "B" movies, some laughably bad, for which he often was paid relatively little (and sometimes nothing, as financing fell apart), who nonetheless seems genuinely appreciative of the opportunities he did have to make a career in the movies, who has no (or few) public axes to grind with other actors, directors, etc., who seems honored by the whole experience and the many life opportunites it gave him, and who seems genuinely awed by many of the great actors and personalities he met. What a difference from so many popular actors who are so immensely self-impressed. All in all, it is easy to understand why Lee has been such a popular and well regarded figure.

Lord of Misrule The Autobiography of Christopher Lee Christopher Lee Peter Jackson 8601404889394 Books Reviews
Who knew that legendary actor and part-time vocalist Sir Christopher Lee had such an imagination? It does make sense when you consider his roles in both the “Star Wars” and “Lord Of the Rings” franchise. However, nothing can begin to prepare you for the epic hero’s journey, “Lord Of Misrule”, a staggering work of fiction that must be read to be believed.
In his witty, eloquent, and darkly humorous style, Lee incorporates himself into the weirdest number of adventures, missteps, and coincidences that don’t involve time travel. From wartime experiences that would cripple an actual man for life to a lifelong career in entertainment that could not possibly be achieved with said crippling, you won’t make it to the first hundred pages without wondering what Sir Christopher must have been smoking to come up with this stuff. And this is WAY before this hilariously fictionalized version of Lee finds fame. After that is a Who’s Who of practically everybody that somehow doesn’t distract Lee from gaining expertise at his golf game.
What a riot! I think this overlooked blend of fantasy and reality should have ushered in a new trend in English literature. While “Harry Potter” might be great for the kids, it looks like Sir Christopher Lee already brought us the adult equivalent decades ago. I wish I could rate this more stars than this guy worked with in such cinema favorites as, “The Terror Of the Tongs” and, “The Torture Chamber Of Dr. Sadism”. Had I known that the unreliable narrator approach in First-Person POV could have been done so well, I wouldn’t have even bothered with the likes of Nabokov and Dostoyevsky.
(NOTE Since the initial writing of this review, it was later revealed to the author that the book is supposed to be an actual autobiography. If you feel confused by the error, imagine how you’ll feel after reading all 400-plus pages of this.)
The read is a bit dry but it is highly informative about the man with only a little bit about the movies he is known for.
An interesting book--the only complaints I have are 1) too much golf; 2) an American language editor should have gone over it before its release in the US. Lee was VERY idiomatic in his use of British slang, and no" translations" were provided. Otherwise, a fascinating look into a relatively obscure life.
Christopher Lee offers his autobiography, describing his life in detail through more than 400 pages, illustrated with glossy photos inserts, some photos in color. Although undoudtedly saddled with Dracula for a long time to come, Lee has lived long enough to add another landmark performance as the wizard allied with Sauron in Lord of the Rings. Be warned that if you are looking for a lot of detail about Dracula, you will be disappointed. The fact is, autobiographies rarely get into the kind of movie-making detail many fans like. Italian lineage, school years, debriefer of returning pilots in North Africa, his early and later career, accopanied by humorous observations. Excellent read.
Much more of a personal & emotional insight than I would have expected from Sir Christopher. An all around delight, especially as he discusses his friendships with Peter and Vincent, and finds something good to say about projects that were beneath him and enthuses about his proudest accomplishment. I hope he has kept journals of the last two decades, with his work on The Hobbit and Hugo, his knighting, and his latest career as a Dark Lord of Metal.
Who will play Sir Christopher in the movie! This is a Life, beyond what anyone could imagine! A WWII hero, real life spy, Born to a real Countess! Spoke 5 or 6 languages, Married for over 50 years to one woman to whom he proposed to on their 2nd date. Performed many of his own stunts. This is an amazing read. He talks about golf like a religion , but there are some funny anecdotes along with it. The insight into the business of an acting career is revealing, many aspiring actors would do well do read this.
