This book! I want to rate it a big fat five, I want to rate it a big fat one.

Luke... was really. Really. Really, really hard to like! Really.
A devastatingly charming manipulator of the highest degree. There is nothing good or redeeming about this man. He is the perfect anti-hero (and one of the best she wrote, I think). Even though you know he's a murderer and a con-man, you still feel just as compelled as the heroine did. Which I guess just shows how good Anne Stuart is, because she never wrote one good thing about him yet she made you root for him, even if you never grow to like him.

Being in his head was even worse. You'd think it's all an act but it's not! He's not a good man. Period.

The heroine, Rachel, annoyed the hell out of me. I can understand her broken childhood which resulted in this skittish, frigid woman full of anger and hate and fear, but I didn't like how she was both TSTL and smart at the same time. For every no she said, she gave in eventually, and that bothers me. She acknowledges he's a dangerous man, yet she goes on sticking her nose and putting herself in his way any chance she got. I get he was this charismatic, devastatingly handsome man with beautiful hands, but for God's sake, the man is a convicted murderer and a professional conman. HAVE SOME FREAKING SENSE. Or stop playing hard to get, because we all know you're gonna give it up eventually. SMH.

On a different note, all Stuart's heroes have beautiful hands, so if you have a beautiful hands fixation like me, Luke seems to have the most beautiful hands of them all.

The plot is very interesting and unique with plenty of twists and turns, but I have to say that for the most part I sort of anticipated each of them.

The romance is... well. I don't know what to say about it. The sex scenes were blurring the lines of downright rape and there are two instances in which Luke... ahem... plays with an unconscious Rachel (one time she's drugged, the other time she was sleeping). No consent = rape. No matter how you wrap it up, it's not romantic or redeemable. The whole thing was just very, very creepy.

But I have to say that while I had issues with the book, it kept me turning the pages like crazy and the writing is, as usually, very good. I almost felt like I was in Santa Dolores or Coffin's Grove, the sweltering heat, the wind, the storms, it's all a beautiful picture painted by words alone. The whole book has this creepy, sinister feel about it, which I loved. The characters, while I didn't like them--everyone in this book is completely crazy--I still felt the author did a great job in developing each and every one into a real, multi-layered person.

The ending is very abrupt but I didn't mind. I'm used to it by now.

So overall, would I recommend it? I just don't know. I liked the book as a whole, but there were parts that I downright hated. I didn't like Luke, but I hated Rachel. I'm really confused about this book, actually.

Ritual Sins Anne Stuart 9780451192523 Books Reviews

This one is on my keeper shelf. One of the most dark and changeable heros you will ever read about. A lost inheritence forces a young woman to investigate the death of her mother. Enter the spiritual leader of a communal group of followers. This one will take you through several twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. Another great read from ANNE STUART!
Slow starter, but excellent story. I loved this book. Once I finally got a 1/4 way through the book it took off. Excellent plot, great story. This is my 2nd book by Anne Stuart and she is now one of my favorite authors.
Not my cup of tea - implausible story line, heroine's actions and responses downright stupid most of the time. Love connection felt weird and unnatural, ending seemed contrived and rushed. I made myself finish it, then deleted it from my .
I picked this story because I have read Anne Stuart's "Ice" novels and was a big fan of her style. This story did not disappoint; the ending was twisted and unexpected and I could not stop reading once I started. I heartily recommend this story to fans of romantic suspense and those who like Gothic aspects.
Disappointing read from Anne Stuart. I just couldn't understand why the woman in this book would fall in love/sleep with a man who seduced her own mother and took all her money. The actual cult and the leader was not clearly defined as to what they "believe" The cancer part of the story was not clarified enough. All the characters were all sort of "freak-showish". Sorry for all the negative remarks but, I really was disappointed in this book. I do not recommend it. I have read many Anne Stuart books and expected more excitement and suspense from this author.
As I have said many times Anne Stuart knows how to write the bad "bad boy" she is so good at it. I almost always hate him at the start of the book but by the end I am rooting for him. She did that with this book AGAIN. I just love her! But she is not for everyone. If your look for a sweet, cute, fluffy romance then she not for you!
I am a fan of Anne Stuart's for life. After reading Nightfall and now Ritual Sins she has pushed her way to the top of my favorite authors list. There is simply NO ONE else out there quite like her. She can create the most unlikely characters that one can imagine. In Nightfall, the hero was a convicted serial killer and in Ritual Sins the hero is a cult leader and ex-con.....interested? You should be!

Read other reviews for the plot synopsis. I will spend this review commenting on the book instead.

Luke is multi-dimensional and not clearly good or clearly bad. Rather, he is an exciting blend of both good and bad. He has lived through hell and is, no doubt, a criminal who has had to "look out for himself" above all others. Usually this type of character would repulse me, but as we get to know this dark and dangerous man, all is explained, and I was able to get behind this man and cheer for him.

Rachel is also tough. I went between love for her and hate for her until I got to know her story. After I realized what she came from and what she had experienced in her life, it all made sense. Rachel's character is EXACTLY as she should be with the life she was dealt.

These are two MESSED UP people! What I loved about this book, is that Anne Stuart allows these two "disasters" to collide, and unknowingly heal each other. Through Rachel, Luke is able to "burn" his past, and through Luke, Rachel is able to "come alive" again. I guess that kind of healing from love is the type of story I like best! Add in some remarkable secondary characters and some evil plots, and I think you've got in your hands one of the best books out there!

DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!
