Liars Inc Paula Stokes Books
I was looking forward to reading this book because of all the reviews, so my hopes were high. Perhaps my hopes were too high and that's why I borderline-hated this book. Did I read the whole thing? Yes- I'm the type of person who needs to finish the book to find out what happens, and sometimes the ending changes my perspective of my opinion.I'm also horrible at describing why I like/dislike books, but I'll give it a try (bear with me, this is the first review I've ever written). The whole book was so unrealistic that it skewed my opinion to the negative. I liked the main character for the first 50-60 pages, but then the idiotic decisions and choices began happening. Normally I can bypass stupid decisions of a character, but these were just so inane that I couldn't get past them. You know how in a horror movie, you're yelling at the screen telling the main character not to go outside because that's where the killer is? I thought the characters in this book were worse than that.
No matter how I didn't like the plot/decisions of the characters, I will say the writing was exceptional, and the book is a fast read. I finished it within a couple hours, and while the general plot was okay, the un-realness of the whole thing took away everything for me. I hope you like/liked this book more than I did!

Liars Inc Paula Stokes Books Reviews
Grade B
When Max, his rich friend Preston and his even wealthier girlfriend Parvati concoct LIARS, INC, a business venture to forge notes and give alibis to their high school classmates, Max didn't count on being Preston's alibi when he took off for Vegas for the weekend. He didn't count on being a suspect in his friend's assumed kidnapping or his real murder either. Max has to figure out what really happened to Preston, and why someone is setting him up.
Paula Stokes masterfully created a multicultural set of interesting, multidimensional characters that defy stereotypes. Max, the narrator was easy to root for, even when he made stupid decisions. He really grew as a character until the end of the book. Parvati wrapped herself so tightly in a cloak of lies I never really trusted her and wasn't sure I liked her. Even after finishing the book I'm not sure. I liked how her heritage, half Indian, was part of who she was, but never in your face. I loved that Max was a foster child who has been adopted as well and how his sister's CF didn't stop her from being a badass.
Although the plot was somewhat far fetched, in the end everything made sense and there weren't any loose ends. Stokes did a great job Max's voice sounded like a teenage boy. Her writing style keep the plot moving. The first 25% of the book, the setup for Preston's disappearance, dragged a bit, then LIARS, INC picked up steam until I was caught up on the mystery. A lot of my theories turned out to be true (can't be more specific without spoiling), but that didn't lessen my enjoyment.
THEMES family, friendship, kidnapping, murder, blackmail, foster care, adoption, multicultural, crime
I loved "Liars, Inc!" There were twists and turns through out the entire story. I feel like Paula Stokes out did herself with this one. "Liars, Inc" is a young adult thriller that will have readers hooked until the very last page. It has been hard trying to find a really good thriller for young adult readers. I feel like Stokes was able to hit the thriller genre right on the mark. "Liars, Inc" is a story that will keep the readers guessing. Even if one thinks they have everything figured out, they will find out that they are completely wrong. It was so hard not peaking ahead to see what was going to happen.
The characters in "Liars, Inc." were fantastic. I really enjoyed the characters. The characters had me guessing the whole time of who was guilty. I couldn't help but keep Max as a suspect. Each character had so many sides. These are some of the most dynamic characters I've ever read about. Max, Preston, and Parvati were all really good friends. Max was dating Parvati and Preston was both of their best friend. Life was great until Preston goes missing. Everyone believes that Max got rid of Preston. Parvati came across as a sketchy rich girl for the majority of the book. As the reader I knew something was up with her even though I couldn't figure it out. Max was always doubting his relationship, not understanding why Parvati wants to be with a poor adoptive kid like himself. The one thing I didn't care for is everything about Parvati screamed sex and I feel like it was a bit much.
This story is such a good one. I think this novel really shows how talented of a writer Stokes is. I am looking forward to more books from her. I enjoyed all of her past novels. I am ready for something new and fun. I love how Stokes is able to engage her readers and keep them guessing and of coursed hooked. I like when novels are fast reads that have a great pace to them. I think that makes is much easier for someone to read a book.
I'll be honest, i'm not the target audience for a YA novel (let's just say i'm up the ladder on age). I purchased the book on a whim based soley on the cover (it's an amazing and haunting image that could be in a museum - it's that striking and good). However, I immediately became hooked by the story of high school classmates who form a company, Liar's Inc. to provide excuses, permissions slips, etc. for classmates.
Everything appears harmless until a student goes missing. At that point in time this novel converts into a sophisticated thriller that keeps you guessing with some of the best in the thriller genre category. Paula Stokes, keeps you guessing and breathless as she leads you on a roller coaster ride which you will never forget.
Liars, Inc, much like lies themselves, may start out as simple and harmless, but by the end they evolve into something which will change you forever. Take the ride - I'm not lying.
