Emperors of Time eBook James Wilson Penn Rachel Olson Reviews
I like time travel stories. There is so much that can be done with the different permutations and paradoxes. Emperors of Time is an enjoyable YA story using real and alternate histories. It starts out with a bang, so to speak, when the mysterious time traveler leaves instructions for Julie on how to travel back in time. She arrives in 1865 and has a brief talk with the time traveler, who then proceeds to save John Wilkes Booth so he can assassinate Lincoln. Seems like the bad guy, right? But we learn that events in history have been tweaked by the so-called emperors of time (the scientists who developed the time travel disk) to makes themselves powerful.
The book is interesting in its use of potential points of history which might have set time onto a different course than the one we know. For that matter, are we living in a different timeline since some future madmen tweaked the history of our past? Hm. That's food for thought.
Overall, I liked this book a lot. Another aspect is the well-developed relationships between the four teens who take on the emperors of time to set things right.
A well plotted and fun read. The story logic and rules of the road are consistent (always a concern of mine in a time travel story) and well-thought out
You can only visit a year once, so no Groundhog Day style endless repeats and every time-jump-destination potentially has slightly different outcomes of "known events". Like who won World War I. Come to think of it that might not have been 'slightly different' )
Appropriately, the kids use their wits and this story-logic to solve some of their dilemmas, like during their trip back to San Francisco circa 1916 (Woo-hoo! Everyone loves flappers!)
A follow-on consequence of the story-logic I enjoyed was chief-time-jumper-extraordinaire-Julie was never too sure if her friends even remembered her much less if history had unfolded as she "remembered". This gave rise to some humorous and touching moments as well as some very relatable awkwardness around her schoolmates.
But my favorite has to be the characters. Great, great characters, and it was lots of fun to watch their adventures.
I liked how they played heavily against type. Sure Billy is an athlete, but he's no dumb jock. In fact, he showed quite a bit of sensitivity and social awareness to some of the mistakes Tim made on the double-date at the bowling alley. Likewise, Tim may be a nerd with a mild case of low self esteem but he's not a socially awkward inept nerd only good for history minutiae. (But he's good for that too.) When Billy stumbles in a few key moments during the sports betting he's there to pick up the slack. Tim is also a pretty good flirt-in-the-making, his banter with Julie was good stuff. (Aspiring Casanovas take notes!)
There is plenty of conflict in the present--America is an Empire and the Russians are lobbing missiles at us (yikes!). We're safe but only if the shield-wall holds. Two guesses on whether it does, but honestly, do you need more than one guess? This is on top of the always present threat of the Emperors of Time trying to rework history for their own nefarious ends. Never a dull moment and plenty of tension to keep you turning the pages. (Chased by the police. Without brakes. In the rain. As missiles... You get the idea.)
I think Emperors of Time would appeal to a broad range of readers. Sure, it's right in the strike zone for teens, but older fans of the genre should find plenty to appreciate in this well thought out and imaginative story.
I am glad I stumbled across the series and am absolutely keeping an eye out for more from JW Penn. Fortunately the second book in the series is already released, I can't wait to read the next adventure and learn what happens next.
Highly recommended!
I have always enjoyed the time travel stories, and this scores very high overall on the list of the books i have read so far. When a time traveler from a distant future in the 24th century, Steven Hopkins, meets the four teens, they discover his wish for them to go in the year 1916 to change certain events to effect a change in the future. The biggest task teens have is to face Emperors of Time, and thus stop the future from going into unwanted hands.
The hook of the novel is that the emperors of time have effected the alteration of the events in the history. The story is very intricately developed, is faultless, and at times made me think philosophically. The plot is new and proves yet again that not all the time travel books are the same. The characters could have been developed a little bit more-but they were great as it is-and a time travel story is not really about a deep dive in every character anyways.
It was such an engaging and easy read that I did not know before I reached the end of the book and ended up wishing I had access to the next book as well. Recommended without reservations to readers of time travel, fantasy.
