Lucky Stiff Mattie Winston Annelise Ryan Books

Mattie, the deputy corner, has two cases to solve. The first was a wheelchair bound man who is found dead in his house which was burned to try to cover the crime. As well as a man whose body is found in a creek and his family is suspected. With the help of Izzy, Mattie's boss/best friend, her family, and her romantic interest Detective Hurley, they have to work to solve the cases. Mattie goes to the casino and blows some of her divorce money and her ex moves in with another woman. Hurley is interested in a fire fighter woman named Candy Kane. Then, Hurley and Mattie head for Florida for training and Candy ends up on same rocky plane ride. There are a lot of mishaps that don't turn out as well and other things that are somewhat disappointing. This is the first in the series I didn't give five stars. The forensics is great and the humor is nice, but this book is the weakest of the series, in my opinion.

Lucky Stiff Mattie Winston Annelise Ryan Books Reviews

The Mattie Winston mysteries are great fun. Poor Mattie just never seems to have any luck, although she does survive the latest series of misfortunes and catch the bad guy every time. This book is not for you if you are a serious mystery reader. You will not be on he edge of your seat in suspense. You might, however, fall off the chair altogether laughing at Mattie's predicaments. She has all the problems many women have - love problems, a few extra pounds, wardrobe malfunctions - just larger than life. The only problem with these books is they're over too soon.
So, I keep a log on excel of all the books I read (I read too many and in the past have re-read by accident- its annoying). Anyway, all of the previous Mattie books have been rated a 10 (out of 10). This one got a 7.5 because the gambling thing annoyed the heck out of me. It came out of nowhere and was nonsensical. 1/2 of a good night, drunk and puking... and Mattie just keeps going. I like that Mattie is down to earth and has common sense. She's also smart. Usually the mishaps are not her fault. So again, I don't believe the gambling thing. Isn't the addiction usually a build up anyway? I hope this was just a glitch because everything else was up to the author's usual standards.
I have loved all of this series until this book. Had a hard time getting through it and absolutely HATED the end. Every book should be written as a possible stand alone book and this wasn't...you have to buy the next to see what happens (and they are not cheap). But even if i wanted to get thr next in the series, this one still stunk...stop with the exes...how many can they have. Stop the weight references...we get it...oiy.
I am hooked on this series, but I am wondering if the "sexual tension" between Hurley and Winston will ever be resolved. It was cute in the first book, tolerable in #2, getting on my nerves in #3 and now, still is not close to resolving in #4 (I'm not quite finished)... I like the series, love the various characters involved, but am having a seriously hard time with these two this time around. So much so I my not read #5. You finally got around to telling Winston's real birth name (good lord), but the "nipple incident" is still without telling. As you have already published #5, I hope I can get some action between the two main characters to wait for #6 in the series.
This series keeps getting better has Mattie continues to develop her character. From hurt and depress woman in the first book. She is not able to handle things better. The minor characters of Izzy, Don and officers show more depth. Steve and the animals could be developed more. In this book, Mattie is back as deputy coroner knowing she cannot have a relationship with Steve. It is Christmas day and Mattie is called to a house fire where the firemen found a victim in the house. He turns out to a paraplegic who just won the jackpot at a casino. He keeps his cash in a home safe and it is missing. Mattie and Steve struggled to find answers. Mattie decides she can win a Jackpot also and starts gambling. Several directional changes are found in the plot before the answer is apparent. This author is adept at keeping the who done it a secret. I have yet known the answer before I finished. This book can be read as a stand alone.
I've been anxiously awaiting this book as I just loved the previous books. I have to say, this one is not my favorite.

While it was still peppered with a bit of humor that made me laugh out loud, I (and many other reviewers) found that the author took Mattie out of character with the whole casino/gambling thing. If she's trying to set future books up for delving into some sort of gambling problem with Mattie, I'm afraid I'll have to bow out of investing in the rest of this series. I don't want the frustrating overhead - I read to reduce the stress of the day; not to add to it.

What drew me to these books in the first place was, the whole murder plot notwithstanding, the books were light hearted, intelligently written and based on what I see in other customers' reviews, contained nicely developed characters we grew to love.

That said, I am at a loss as to why the author would take a character whom she took great care to craft as a very intelligent woman, and turn her into a total idiot. It's just out of character and I think it detracted from the book and definitely detracted from Mattie.

Additionally, the whole string of unbelievable bad luck, one incident after another, one interruption after another, one obstacle in rapid succession to another, seems a bit much. How many underwear incidents can a person really have? And I won't spoil the ending for you, but it pretty much sucked.

I'd like to see this series lighten up a bit again and not require the reader to suspend belief. Again, I love this author, but this book wasn't a fun read for me.

At the end of the book, you can preview the first chapter in new series by this author. In the sampling I read, we have a protagonist who appears to have a drinking problem. Enough already with the addictions and the predictably negative fallout from them!

I think the series can continue to evolve and grow, be funny and interesting and suspenseful, without complicating it with so many negative experiences.
