I wanted to know more about autism, and this book describes very well what Emily Colson's life is like day-by-day caring for her son who is autistic.

She considers it a blessing to have this son and to provide loving care for him. She takes one day at a time and has done her best to communicate with her son, even devising a special way using her special drawing talent to help her son understand what she is trying to say to him. She is a very good listener and observer and understands her son better than anyone else. She does have help from family and others, but she is by far the main caregiver.

The author wrote the book with humor so it did make me laugh in places, but it also brought tears to my eyes. We may wonder why some people have such a rough life, but the author points out that those challenges can also be blessings.

This is not just a story of a mother's love for her son, but also one of great courage and strength. Not only do Emily and Chuck learn a lot about autism by reading and studying about it, but Max proves to be the best teacher of all. While we can learn certain ways to deal with children with special needs, we still need to see them as individuals. Just like we learn about our normal children and the the ways their personalities develop and what their needs are. Emily learns that she and Max are the experts about what Max's needs are. She learns to trust herself and Max and has to stand her ground to make a life for Max. It is very sad to writing this as Chuck is dying and I know that it will be an enormous loss to both Emily and Max. You will be a changed person after you read this story.
As the mom of a girl who teaches young children, some of whom have autism, I bought this book for her. But being an avid reader and ex special education teacher myself, I just had to read this book for myself before I gave it to my daughter. I am a Charles Colson fan already, so seeing him on TV talking about the book and his grandson, whetted my interest. The book was everything I expected, and more! What a wonderful mother Emily Colson must be-willing to have loved her son while learning about this dreadful disease! Before I purchased the book I wondered if it would detail techniques and helps for any mother, grandmother, or teacher who might teach autistic children. What I read was really fantastic help for anyone dealing with autistic children or adults. You can laugh, cry, and learn from this mother who loved her son, Max, to give him the very best of life he could have with her help. I would recommend buying DANCING WITH MAX from ASAP!
Emily Colson has told her story, and the story of her beloved son, Max, in such a way that I suspect even those who aren't "up close and personal" with someone in the Autism spectrum will gain compassion, insight, and understanding. How much more for those of us with loved ones who live with this in some dimension!

Great hope and encouragement to continue loving and continue living a life so different from what we ever envisioned! Also, a breaking of hardness that would allow one to judge both child and parent - opening the way for empathy and willingness to accept (even help?) others trying to live in the "normal" world when their brains don't function "normally."

Because of the vivid description of life with autism, this might be a difficult book for some to read. But I assure you it is worth it. Thank you, Emily Colson for your transparency!
All Mothers and Fathers hope for a healthy, happy child, one who does well in school and eventually becomes a healthy, happy, productive adult. Emily Colson and her husband were not exceptions. Their son Max was born with autism and the stresses, frustrations, sadness that they faced as a family are well documented in the pages of her book. However, this story is not so much focused on these stress filled times, rather she skillfully writes of the ways they found joy in the journey and how God moved in their lives to help them not only cope with the problems, but find laughter and solutions as they faced the challenges of raising a special son. I really enjoyed reading this book and learning more about the Colson family, including the sections written by her well known father, Chuck Colson.
I have read more than a few books on autism. Emily Colson's book Dancing with Max was a joy to read and shows the real life of a Christian mom raising an autistic son. I kept calling a friend who recommended the book and we would say together.."She's one of us. She gets it." She understands the heartbreak, the getting back up and trying again when you have been smacked down, the difficulty of dealing with family and friends who just don't quite understand but learn over time and the blessings of watching your child grow in a different way than most other children. In the middle of all the struggles she speaks of her relationship with God and how that has made the difference.

I have several favorite parts of the book and I don't want to ruin it for anyone. I will call one the "swimsuit incident." I laughed until I cried. Another was Max's baptism. It was a touching story and tells of the struggle that many with special needs face within the church and within their own hearts. I love her tenacity of continuing to go out again..and try once more...even when last time failed. She talks of struggles with the schools. (Any hands up out there?) She also tells how they basically made their own therapy. (Again..any hands up?) And also she discusses struggles with finding a fit within the faith community. (More hands I am sure.) Mostly she just talks about her love of Max. Because love does cover all.
